Frequently Asked Questions

Who is eligible to play for Tigard Competitive Hoops?

Boys in grades 3 - 8 and residing in the Tigard-Tualatin School District are eligible to try out for Tigard Competitive Hoops. In 7th & 8th grade, boys who will be attending Tigard High School will be given priority over players that will be attending Tualatin High School.

Girls in grades 4 - 8 and residing in the Tigard-Tualatin School District are eligible to try out for Tigard Competitive Hoops.

Do all players try out?

Yes, all players are required to try out for a team. The only exceptions would be substantial extenuating circumstances (ex. physical injury) with a returning player and would require approval from the TCH Board.

Players are evaluated by a multitude of Head Coaches from many levels and TCH using multiple criteria.

When are tryouts?

Tryouts for the 2023 season are closed.

What is the cost to play?

The total cost is typically between $375 - $425 broken down as follows:

$165-$185 Registration TCH Fees w (+ CC Processing Fee if paying by card).
$200 - $250 Tournament Fees (coach decides on number of tournaments to participate in over the course of the season)

The coach, in consultation with players and parents, will decide which and how many tournaments to enter.  We recommend a minimum of six (6) tournaments, or approximately 24 games, with an ideal amount of eight (8) tournaments spread out over the course of the season. See "What does my money go toward?" for more details.

Uniforms must be returned at the end of the season.  Please do not alter uniforms in any way (names, etc.)   Players that don't return uniforms or return a damaged uniform will be charged an additional $50.

Rosters

We reserve the right to have up to 12 players per team. Based on the levels of participation, we may choose to create additional teams if the demand and numbers warrant such action.

Playing Time

Players in grades 3-5 should play a minimum of 16 minutes (2 quarters) per game wherever possible.  Players in grades 6-8 will play a minimum of 8 minutes (1 quarter) per game wherever possible.

Are scholarships available?

A limited number of scholarships (full or partial) are available and cover the TCH registration fee. Scholarships are based on the same criteria as used in the School Free or Reduced Meals Program.  Significant financial hardships may also be considered. Please email us if you have questions.  Apply for a scholarship here.

What is your refund policy?

If your child tried out but did not make a team or did not try out and has decided not to play, you will not owe the remainder of the amount due less the processing fee. The processing fee also includes fees for tryouts and insurance ($35).

However, if your child tried out and made a team at any level, but then later decided not to play, no refund will be provided.  This ensures TCH does not have to bear the cost of monies already spent for that player on uniforms, training and other costs.  Please allow 10-15 business days after your request has been approved to receive the refund.

What does my money go toward?

The registration fee paid to TCH covers the following:

  • Insurance
  • Gym fees
  • Player Development
  • Uniforms

There may be additional team related costs such as  t-shirts, team gear, etc and will be solely managed by each individual team.  Teams are advised to designate a team parent and open a new checking account in several parents' names.  These monies are not part of Tigard Competitive Hoops and management of the funds is the responsibility of the parents. Any excess remaining when the season is complete remains the property of the parents. Accounts should not be opened in Tigard Competitive Hoops' name

Can I raise money for my team or for Tigard Competitive Hoops? What if I want to raise money to sponsor a specific player?

Teams may raise money for your team, but should disclose that this is for parent use only and is not related to Tigard Competitive Hoops. Any donations to the team are not be tax deductible unless you form a tax-exempt entity. You may not raise money in Tigard Competitive Hoops' name for specific use for your team as this would jeopardize Tigard Competitive Hoop's tax exempt status as it would be providing preferential benefit to specific parents.

Any fund raising for Tigard Competitive Hoops should be coordinated with a Tigard Competitive Hoops board member, and for any donation to be tax deductible it would have to be paid to Tigard Competitive Hoops. We would be very happy to discuss donations with anyone interested in sponsorship.

If you want to raise money for a specific player, it would fall under the category of raising money for your team. You cannot raise money under Tigard Competitive Hoops' name to sponsor on a tax-deductible basis a single player. Any tax deductible scholarship will have to be coordinated by Tigard Competitive Hoops on a non-preferential basis to qualified players (boundary lines and skill) going to those in most need. Any preferential scholarship funding that does not go through an equitable process available to all skilled players could jeopardize our tax-exempt status.

Who runs Tigard Competitive Hoops?

Tigard Competitive Hoops is run on a 100% donated basis by a team of volunteer board members who are trying to help out (see Board Members). Beyond the satisfaction of developing young players and giving back to the community, there is zero compensation to board members. All board members have full time jobs in addition to these volunteer activities so we appreciate your patience as we work to create a great experience for you and your child(s).  We welcome any feedback given in a constructive and helpful manner.  To avoid a conflict of interest, paid coaches cannot be voting board members. Tigard High School coaches act as advisors to the board.

What is your policy regarding coaches being alone with players?

We have a strict policy that a coach should never be alone with a player that is not their own child. This is a strict policy that must be adhered to in order to protect our coaches from any allegations, to protect your child from any potential feeling of discomfort, and to protect those who have sponsored this program.

Who coaches Tigard Competitive Hoops?

Our goal is to have the boys & girls 8th Grade A teams coached by experienced individuals with an affiliation with the Tigard High School basketball program.

All other teams are coached by parent volunteers. We strive to select coaches with backgrounds in playing and coaching at competitive levels in youth sports. All coaching candidates are interviewed and evaluated by the coach and player development board members to make sure their knowledge, coaching style and overall basketball philosophy are in line with Tigard Competitive Hoops' mission. All coaches go through criminal background checks.

What is your relationship with THS?

We closely team with the Tigard High School Basketball program. We will share the same plays, language, drills, practice and coaching philosophy. TCH coaches will attend several coaching clinics held by Boys Varsity head coach Shawn Alderman in order to provide instruction with the program.

TCH players will have free admission to ALL Varsity basketball games as well as a cheering section in the stands. Many other activities are currently being planned that provide an opportunity for TCH players to participate in and enjoy the exciting atmosphere of a Tigard High basketball game!
